![]() ![]() We don't have any horn solos on this record, but there are a couple of spots where you can really hear them. It's like a big sound that goes underneath the guitars that you really don't hear, it just fattens it. That guitar riff on the track that you hear has the horns playing the same thing. Sometimes when we feature the horns you can hear them, but what we usually do is have them play the same parts as my guitar, like in the " I Hate Myself For Loving You" track. You have to listen carefully or otherwise you can't really tell. We've done this on every album since I Love Rock And Roll. JJ: No, there are several songs that have them in it. You mentioned that you used the Uptown Horns on the album. I'm proud that all the background vocals are ours and that all the music except for the Uptown Horns is us. We did it all ourselves and I'm really proud of it. They always play incredible, but this time they did everything exactly the way it was called for in each song without even thinking about it. Thommy Price and Ricky Byrd really fucking played their asses off. I think that the band played to new levels. ![]() I don't know why, maybe it's because of all the vocal exercises that I've been doing. I also think that I've sung better that I ever have before. I really love every song and every note on the album. The reason I feel that way is because a lot of times when we finish a record, even though I've always loved all the songs, there were always one or two that I wasn't as crazy about like I was about the others. I really believe this is the best one we've ever done. Everybody always says that their new album is the best thing they've ever done. We really grooved in the studio this time. I also wrote several songs with Desmond Child, the band and Kenny Laguna. We wrote one song together called " Backlash." It's the first song on the record. Before we went to the Far East, I started writing with Paul Westerberg of The Replacements. We were in the studio everyday - all day long. The district had, in this period, started a number of other schools, including the even more imposing Denny School on Battery Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in Belltown, opened 1884. Classes extended through 12th grade, and the first class graduated from 12th grade in 1886. From 1884, it was known as the Central School. The latter, an "elegant wooden building" with an imposing "French mansard roof, clock tower, and tall central belfry" superseded the old Central School as well as the North School. It originally had two classrooms a third was built in its attic in 1881. In 1870 the first "permanent" school building, the Central School, opened on Third Avenue between Madison and Spring Streets. A year later the school moved again to a temporary building (called Bacon's Hall after its first teacher, Carrie Bacon) located at the site of the present King County Court House. A year later, the school moved to Yesler's Pavilion (later Yesler's Hall) at present-day First and Cherry. In 1867, the public school moved to what was then the County Building on Third Avenue between James and Jefferson, the site of today's Prefontaine Fountain. It functioned as Seattle's first public school. Its first class offering was a primary school (elementary school) taught by Asa Mercer, and for some years it was jointly supervised by the newly formed Seattle School Board its own Board of Regents. With it you can unleash special powers, like temporarily adding another worker or making your little guys move a lot faster. Fortunately there's a nifty little gadget called a bonus meter which fills up over time. Adding to the difficulty are lurking creatures such as wolves, ghosts, and hornets that require specialists to deal with, requiring more buildings and thus more materials on hand. ![]() The trick is to manage your wood, food, and gold in such a way as to complete all given tasks within a certain amount of time. Workers will encounter obstacles that require more resources to deal with, such as steep ravines that need bridges, or heavy boulders that require smashing. The level ends when all goals are met and the little workers are back safe in the hut. Eventually buildings can be upgraded to produce more resources or, in the case of the work hut, house more workers with which to accomplish the various tasks. Farms, Sawmills, mines, and other buildings that can help generate more resources can be built, but you need to have enough wood to do that as well. Picking up a resource costs nothing, but some things must be gotten from hard labor, such as chopping wood, which costs food stocks. Said worker must gather supplies of wood, food, or gold and use those supplies to accomplish their task, whether it be to build adequate roads, dig mines, find valuable artifacts, what have you. The youngest of Arthur and Helen's three children, Prince Andrew is secretly in love with the Princess Elizabeth, whose father has decided that she will marry one of King Arthur's sons, albeit the most worthy. This guy used to be in a Punk band? Now he’s in this awesomely camp, Soul/Jazz pop ensemble.? Brilliant!” – Kieran, Hunting For George 4. The more I learnt about the band, the more obsessed with the group’s finely dressed frontman, Paul Weller I became. So immediate and aggressive but such an out and out pop song at the same time. “I first stumbled upon this gem as a teenager on an Indie disco dancefloor and my mind was instantly blown. A time honored tradition of TSC but very muted in this particular case.” – Butch, Steve Hoffman Music Forums 5. The push and pull of emotional love with a bit of sticking it to the Man. “Love intertwined with a small smattering of politics, barely noticeable. “While the song is clearly an anthem to clear thinking and action - don’t get “caught up in the dailies,” or your Facebook feed - it comes from an artist who, even in the 80s, clearly relished the opportunity to change directions at unexpected moments.” – Thomas McLean, Los Angeles Review of Books 6. It’s five minutes of pure brilliance, featuring a defined soul in overall sound, substantiated by both the horn sections and Mick Talbot on Hammond organ that provide a great backing to Weller’s deep vocal.” – Reece Bithrey, Untitled Blog 7. “The album’s opener provides the perfect vibe that sets the rest of the record. Some 80s bands (Prefab Sprout) were masters at this balancing act although Style Council didn’t get it right most of the time, this single is a success.” – Bona Drag, RYM 8. There’s a very thin, subjective line separating a song from “lame as hell” and “awesomely poignant”, and it’s hard to end up on the right side. “Something I’ve been fascinated with lately is the dichotomy between “cheesy” and “touching”. “Up until the release of You Do Something To Me some 20 years later, You’re The Best Thing was the go-to Weller Wedding song of choice, with its beautiful glissando guitar line and Curtis falsetto it remains one of his most complete all-round songs.” – Paperback Rioter, 9. Oh yeah, and they looked fantastic as well.” – Martin Freeman, GQ Magazine 10. There were songs to uplift, songs to break your heart, and tunes you could hear in a club that only required you dance your ass off. And if politics wasn’t your thing, no matter. They were able to smuggle quite subversive stuff into the Top Of The Pops studio and Smash Hits magazine. None of these did it as sweetly and commercially as The Style Council. Jerry Dammers, Elvis Costello, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, and a host of British reggae artists such as Aswad, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Steel Pulse were all writing material that overtly touched on social and political issues. Contrary to the subsequent prevailing myth, the 80s were about more than big hair and yachts. Lyrically, they managed to stand out at a time when there were some very good writers around. To go from straight-ahead jazz to sweet soul, impressionistic classical to early UK rap, stripped-down acoustic to house, they covered more ground than your average top ten pop idol. The breadth of their ambition over the course of six-odd years was admirable: no two albums were alike certainly, but the same was true of the singles. Firstly, of course, the content: musically, The Style Council were way ahead of most of the opposition, as far as UK pop was concerned. ![]() I guess in the time-honoured tradition of ‘pop’ being about form and content, they sure did bring both. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why they made such an impression on me. Who am I kidding? Yes, and to my adulthood as well. “The Style Council gave so much to my youth. Very few people will have anything like the same top ten. But when I remember one, I make up a playlist for it! These are my favourite Style Council songs, nothing more, nothing less. It turns out that not as many acts meet that criterion as I would have thought.
